I reeeeally didn't like this novel... :?
It waffles on extensively (one sentence with 19 commas and 2 semi-colons) and doesn't really seem to go anywhere very fast. I found it to be the kind of book where you read a page and then have to read it again because you zoned out due to boredom. i hope this is just because i am missing something, and that something could be written about in an essay - if so, PLEASE let me know!
btw this is in no way an attack on people who liked the book, i just feel like i must be missing something...

I'm one of those who liked so much this novel. Indeed, it somehow reflects the way people used to think bout God and religion in general. Silas Marner is one of them, his thought of God was strong at first but his stregth becomes weak, because his love does not based on a strong background"basis".

As a former teacher of both English literature and religion I would like to point out that practically all English novels written before, let us say, 1950 contain a lot of references to the Christian faith. Most of these novels not only tell us what society in general thought of its Christian faith, but also shows us what individuals believed or refused to believe. What is most striking for us, living in the 21st century, is that religious ideas of societies and individuals in let us say the 18th and 19th centuries do not really differ so much from ours.
