Sobe Life Water Dancing Lizards Super Bowl Commercial
Posted on Sunday the 3rd of February, 2008 at 8:37 pm in Asides
Sobe Life water is presenting a new website http://www.thrillicious.com/ and is using dancing Lizards to do it. I’m partial to reptiles, so this is one of the best commercials I’ve ever seen. Want to see the commercial? Watch it below or go to the website and click on the Super Bowl Ad link.

I don’t get it.
We’re supposed to like SoBe for what reason?
Just shows how lame people can be.
Reply to treyCommercials like this aren’t trying to convince people of the product as much as create a recognizable image for the product.
It is all about buzz.
Reply to AaronThen, there ya go.
People can be more stupid than I originally thought. Pepsi paid probably $3MM to create buzz….about lizards.
Reply to treyThis is one of the best commercials, I have seen in a while—Good Job Sobe.
Reply to Nancy PineiroHere’s some buzz for you two.
These waters really taste bad. Have you seen everyone has them? Snapple. Propel. Aquafina. Coke. I’d have to say I’ve only had one I like. And I must have been drunk and parched, so anything would have done. Because next few I tried never lived up to hype.
Reply to hollygolightlyYou people haven’t hit on the true buzz and what people care about? How the “pedophile” Michael Jackson is making a comeback at this beverage company’s expense.
Reply to jonnyBuzz is so shallow and empty. Anyone can do it.
SoBe USED TO BE personal.
Reply to danielWho is the girl?
Reply to RuthNaomi Campbell
Reply to AaronGossip junkies like me know her as the girl who used to throw cell phones at people. Maybe she’ll start throwing lizards at people.
That would create buzz.
Reply to gossipgirlAt first blush, the commerical was cute. I wouldn’t have picked Ms. Campbell as my spokesperson, but that was SOBE’s choice. I also thought the lizzards looked “threatening” rather than cute. They looked like thugs. That is not the image I would want for my new product. Exactly what age range was this commercial aimed at? Ms. Campbell is on the darkside of her career. The lizards are frightening–so it’s not aimed at children. And the use of the iconic lizard–well–has anyone heard of Geico? Since SOBE does have a lizard as the companies icon, I would have definitely made them more “friendly” looking. Picked a dancer rather than Ms. Campbell. Probabably would have not used Michael Jackson’s music in ANY respect since his name and persona will forever be tainted by controversy. I feel that the whole ad just missed the bullseye by about twelve feet.
Reply to PossumGirlI thought the lizards could have held the commercial without Naomi Campbell’s “help.”
I agree that the commercial probably isn’t going to be part of a successful ad campaign, but it has realistic-ish lizards in it…dancing ones which should make at least a little buzz.
Personally, the realism of the lizards is what I liked about it, and I think if the lizards — I should start saying reptiles — were cuter they wouldn’t fit with the logo that SoBe uses: the logos always have a sinister look to them.
Reply to AaronAre you saying that black people or the image of a Hip Hop commercial isn’t acceptable on televison. So what if we used Brittany Spears would that be better. Get a life the real issue is how people spend 2.7 million for a 30 second commercial and we have hungry families and people losing their homes and can’t get help from none of these big tycoons were freely giving our money away to. Oh and maybe if we used Gothic lizards would you be happy!
Reply to Realistwow, did you really think you were being smart when you said all that. to some ppl you may have looked the part, but come on. so what kid is going to walk into a store or gas station or where ever and be like, hey i want life water mommy. are you serious? it’s not supposed to appeal to kids. thanks for trying to be smart though.
Reply to hippiekissesi dont care what all of you think its good entertainment and thats what its supposed to be nothing else–lets not over analyze things here
Reply to AndieIf you remember the Thriller video, the whole entire premise of the video was sparked by the female (MJ’s date) in the video. Therefore, it would make sense that Naomi was used in the commercial. And, so what if the commercial didn’t really need Naomi - the actual Thriller video didn’t need the female co-star either. But, like Andie said, the ad was for entertainment purposes. We shouldn’t be going all Sigmund Freud over here.
Reply to StargazerThey, should not promote Michaels “Jesus Juice” without Michael…thats wrong
Reply to Donald TrumpAs a male i actually thought the female made me interested in the commercial. I didnt know who the female was so searched the internet.i thought Naomi was beautiful. She sold me on it
Reply to dNever had I seen a commercial so retarded as to make me change the channel every time it comes on until I saw this one. Wow. I am now dumber from having watched that commercial. Hey Sobe people here’s a good idea for your next commercial:
Three midget clowns doing handstands clap their feet together to the beat of Run DMC’s Walk This Way while Pamela Anderson does jumping jacks on a trampoline while wearing a biohazard suit. Oh wait, we would need to get the Sobe Lizards in there somewhere, well you can probably figure out something that doesn’t make any sense, apparently you’re very good at that.
See, I can piece together completely irrelevant things and make a completely disassociated and stupid commercial too!
Thankfully the “Messing with Sasquatch” commercials are still on the air to keep me entertained between programs.
Reply to Nacho LibreI thought the commercial was great! I didnt know that was Naomi Campbell at first. She really looks good, despite what people may think about her. And she did really good in the commercial. “Let it go people! That scar from her past has heeled. Can’t people find anything else to talk about, rather than shun a person for their past? Who hasnt done something messed up one time or another in their life?? Dont act like you are just perfect. We are all human and we all make mistakes… Dont hate on her for that… And Michael Jackson still holds a soft spot in my heart. Love him!
Reply to CranberiYou guys are tripping. You think that those lizards are “dark”??? Are you kidding me? they are dancing around to Michael Jackson with SoBe made out of diamonds in their mouths. Obviously you have a hidden fear of reptiles. Naomi did great in the commercial. The only reason I am on this site right now is because I wanted to know who the girl was. SoBe didn’t sell me, but they got me to turn up the commercial every time I see it on TV.
Reply to Vince Maci thought it was kindof bad beyond the song. all the lizards did was make me think of geico. and naomi campbell can dance to save her life, even though the coreography didn’t do anything to prevent her from looking stupid. i think that every time i see it, and i never remember the product its pushing. thats not a good thing.
Reply to AlexCTthis commercial is just stupid.
Reply to KTi don’t get it…what is the point of this commercial? So zombie lizards might like this product? Will I become a zombie lizard? Or should I smoke some more pot?
Reply to tbseriously every time i see this commercial i get so pissed i have to change the damn channel, this commercial does nothing to make me want to buy their product which is freaking water…all i see is a bunch of lizards dancing with some black chick to thriller, it makes absolutely no sense
Reply to abkthe black lady really looked nice i knew who she was rgt away i thought as she danced she’s got the longest legs i’ve ever seen.ok she’s no beyonce’ but she held her own, she looked very nice and she looked as if she was having fun
Reply to ms spirit smithWhat is the name of the female in the super bowl dancing lizard commercial??
Reply to MelissaSome of you need to get a life. Campbell was unbelievably sexy, if you dissagree youre either a very jealous female, or someone who needs to lose their virginity. Who didnt laugh at that chubby lizard dancing to thriller? cheesey but hilarious! On the subject of MJ all i have to say is hes a dirt bag. Its depressing that our society allows so many people to slip through the cracks. But dont ever make the mistake of judging an artists work based soley on the actions of their personal life. Most great music has a dirty secret. You’re lost if you think different. In closing, lighten up everyone, quit being so closed minded. Take a marketing class, you may not have liked the commercial, but youre still talking about it! Sobe wins. Oh and Naomi call me that dance was cute!
Reply to Sobe...ok so the commercial was sobe’s tribute to MJ and his 25th aniversary of his work. you may consider the 30 seconds of dancing lizards to be dumb but its about a shock factor of sorts, after all it did make most of you stop and say “wtf?” didnt it?the link for the site and a basic description of the ad has been blogged all over the web time and time again with countless others posting about how they didnt get it, didnt like it, or w/e their rant was about it. either way it hit the biggest media that the world has to offer, the internet. whether you hate it or love it sobe did what they set out to do and that was to cause people to talk about it. some say the lizards looked a bit dark, have you ever looked at sobe’s logo? there logo is that of 2 lizards facing head to tail in a sort of yin & yang style maybe even tribal like in nature. sobe’s drinks are supposed to be revitalizing to those who need it such as athletes or extreme sports participants, those who push to achieve a lil more. plus the zombies of thriller weren’t cute and cuddly neither.there are some of you who dont like MJ or cambell for their recent misdeeds, but when they were in the prime of their career they were almost legendary icons who some say may have changed that particular field of industry for future generations to come. so before you get pissed about an ad that supposedly “makes no sense” you should think of what it has done, which is caused a hype that not 1 person can seem to get over no matter how many times its laid to rest.the lizards appeal to younger generations, the leggy ms cambell appeals to the more adolecent generation, the song appeals to almost every generation and in the end sobe achieved the result they set out for which is mass media hype and talk at the water coolers on monday.
Reply to daedelusI cant imagine being the Madison Ave pitch man who had to sell this concept, the guy had to have had serious b@lls or was on his last day before retirement.
Im not sure what the product tie-in between;
A.) Naomi Campbell
B.) Dancing Lizards
3.) MJ’s, “Thriller”
..necessarily have to do with the product, or even the branded lifestyle of the product.
Ok, maybe the product is refreshing and its implied that it offers some form of “thrill” in the form of its liquid refreshment, I’ll accept that.
Naomi Campbell, although in the twilight of her career as a Super Model still possesses some degree of “thrill” but its a bit of a stretch,
The Sobe “lizard” in one dimensional form has been around for a few years now, I can go with why that was included that too.
Now, gathering a group of animated lizards to dance to MJ’s Thriller, while being accompanied off-frame by Naomi Campbell (didnt even know it was her til I came here) and inserting a lizard with the “Sobe” dental grill and finally another lizard eating an insect in the dancing troupe and the traffic renders the message lost in the shuffle.
Im not entirely sure who the target market is here; whether it be youngsters drawn in by the eye catching lizards, 30-somethings who have an affinity for the early/mid-80’s hook of MJ, or contemporary Hip Hop lifestylers.
Left on its own with just the Lizards, its no great shakes and doesnt sustain my attention very well. Throw in Naomi and it becomes confused. Give select lizards specific character traits and then toss in a hit song from the very early days of Mtv, conjuring up images of zombies and that red leather suit, and Im left more than a little lost and marginally insulted.
Again, Im really curious as to how the pitch man sold this concept.
Its a real train wreck.
Whats the sell line at the end? I missed it.

I think the entire point was, “Hey, I got this idea for a cool commercial during the superbowl.”
They seem to have quickly and quietly killed the campaign, so I think that even they realized that while the commercial did standout during the Super Bowl, it is not a good long-term ad campaign.
Reply to AaronAaron: bullcrap. I’m watching a baseball game right now and EVERY DAMN COMMERCIAL BREAK that stupid lizardmodelbadwater crap comes on. I wish they’d killed it. But for whatever reason they keep playing it. It does nothing for me in terms of ’shock value’, every time I see it I think “wow what a horrible commercial, they must care equally little about making a good product.” I will never buy Sobe, they probably put nicotine in their drinks to hook buyers, lord knows their commercials can’t do it.

My condolences. It was one of the best Super Bowl commercials, but I wouldn’t want to have to see it all the time.
I haven’t tried and of the new sobe drinks including the life waters, but I did like their originals: dragon fruit was delicious.
Reply to AaronI agree with everyone who said this commercial made no sense. Honestly, the only time I think about this product is when they show the stupid commercial. I wouldn’t even know the product was Sobe if I didn’t come here. I Googled “stupid lifewater commerical” after having seen it on TV, just to see how many people felt the same, and it brought me here. Commercials that annoy me have the opposite effect… it makes me want to actively AVOID the product, just like those ugly gerbils in the old Quiznos commerical.
Reply to ChaseWow this is hilarious. I just googled “life water commercial is stupid” as well and got led to this site.
I couldnt stand the first commercial. I just dont understand the point of naomi campbell dancing. Dancing lizards? Ok fine, copy off Geico if you want…but wtf is the point of campbell.
The new one is just as infuriating. Its just campbell in a bathing suit. Thats the only point of the commercial, to show her ass at the end. Shes irrelevant. The commercial just makes no sense. I hope vitamin water destroys life water in sales because the person who “came up” with such these ads deserves to get the shit kicked out of him for being an unoriginal loser.
Reply to blahblahExactly what blahblah said,I mean seriously is it necessary to have a half -nude women in a water commercial? Sobe can go shove their agenda down someone elses throat. I guess they think putting women next to a beach will make us run to the store and buy a pack of their garbage product. Why couldn’t they have put a buissinessman on his way to work?- No because that’s boring and doesn’t appeal to people yet it makes as much sense as this garbage. Oh ya what’s up w/ the new commercial, every five seconds the girl is making some mutated laughing noise. They’re just trying to make a commercial that will stick in peoples heads whereas in reality, you could have literally advertised any product in that random commercial.
Reply to tdpOk…This site is really stupid because you guys are sitting her arguing over a commercial that happened to have one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, not to mention the cute little lizards. Wow, Naomi would love to see just how many people are jealous of her. She is one fierce, attractive, and very talented model who obviously was good enough for not 1 but 2 sobe water commercials. Not to mention she was “Versace’s” favorite and number one model. I think that just about sums it up.
Sincerely,
“A NON-JEALOUS WOMAN”
Reply to Krs1Side note: I’d like to point out that people who posted comments here came here through Google just as you did, so this “site” is not “really stupid” even if you disagree with the people who posted.
